Born in Dunkirk, Angillis spent his most productive years working in London, where his genre scenes greatly appealed to collectors for their accurate portrayal of the customs and social context of observable reality. This painting and its pendant focus on the country pub as the center of English village life and leisure. Here, the scene features lawn bowlers intent on their game, with a man waving off a spaniel, who wants to play ball. This charming motif was clearly designed to please the dog-loving English. Behind, numerous interesting characters enjoy hearty pub fare.
