Over the course of many years, Jim Dine has explored a handful of favored motifs—domestic items, bathrobes, hearts, and tools, among others. Dine's father and grandfather were both shopkeepers; Dine first came to know and appreciate hand tools and painting materials in these stores. He later adopted them as artistic motifs in their own right, treating the tools as an extension of his hand, a surrogate for the artist himself.
