Between 1974 and 1979, Alan Ross served as a darkroom assistant to the iconic American photographer Ansel Adams. Though highly influenced by his close relationship with Adams, Ross maintains his own landscape vision. Golden Gate Bridge, Twilight, from Fort Baker, which returns to the setting of Adams’ 1932 photograph Golden Gate before the Bridge (also on view in this gallery), exemplifies Ross’s reverence for and independence from his mentor. Both photographs present a harmonious attention to lighting, but while Adams emphasizes the sublime and untouched landscape, Ross accentuates the majesty and strength of modern engineering.
