The studio nude was a major theme in Emil Ganso's career. In this chiaroscuro wood engraving, Ganso exploits the full range of contrasts of light and shade to depict a female model in the artist's atelier. Unlike other images in this section, there is no interaction between the model and the artist, who is represented only by his paintings on the wall—a landscape on the left and another studio nude on an easel, reflected in the upper-right corner of the mirror. Thus, the artist is implicitly the observer and creator, as well as the viewer by extension.
