Description

A prolific and successful artist, Charles Loring Elliott moved from Syracuse to New York City in the early 1830s to study with John Trumbull (American, 1756–1843). He was known for his ability to render direct and pleasing likenesses and painted nearly 700 portraits during his lifetime.

In this portrait of Dr. William Hamilton Stockwell, completed at the height of Elliott's career, we are equally struck by the intimacy of the sitter's cleareyed gaze and by the luxurious fur collar, which suggests his station in life as a well-to-do physician.
