Yoshida Hodaka

Japanese, 1926-1995

Yoshida Hodaka, the second son of printmaker Yoshida Hiroshi and younger brother of Tôshi, was drawn to avant-garde waka poetry and oil painting. He participated in the 1949 Yomiuri Independent Exhibition along with his future wife Chizuko, though they were not to meet for another few years; they married in 1953. In 1957, the couple traveled to the United States where Hodaka led woodblock printmaking workshops at numerous colleges and universities, including the University of Oregon.
