Diaz de la Peña began his artistic career as a porcelain painter in the Gillet factory. In the mid-1820s, he began working in oil, first copying works in the Louvre, then painting still lifes, flowers, and landscapes. He later turned to mythological and literary subjects, and to orientalist scenes. Since he never traveled outside Europe, his paintings of Eastern life are based on imagination and the works of his contemporaries, particularly Eugène Delacroix.
