Boston-born social realist Jack Levine's work is known for its sardonic humor and biting commentary on humanity. Street Scene #2 was painted while Levine was employed by the Works Progress Administration's Federal Arts Project from 1935–1940. The figures of the three men are deliberately distorted, as are figures in many of his other paintings, an effect Levine likened to a taffy pull.
