- Bio
American born, Mary Cassatt spent most of her career in Paris and exhibited with the Impressionists for many years. She learned printmaking at the encouragement of Edgar Degas and distinguished herself with a remarkable group of color prints. Her masterful use of aquatint, etching, and drypoint, and skilled hand-wiping of each plate, make these prints among the finest of the decade. In 1935, three of these valuable prints entered the Portland Art Museum's collection from the Bequest of Winslow B. Ayer.
