Lilian Pherne Bain was a sculptor as well as a painter. She studied at the Art Students League in New York City, where she assisted instructor Frank DuMond for more than ten years. She also taught children's classes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in that city. After returning to Portland, she taught at Pacific University (which was founded by her great, great grandmother, Tabitha Brown) from 1904 to 1910. She was one of the early women members of the Portland Sketch Club. Years later she served on the Portland Art Commission from 1940 to 1946. Her style was impressionistic. Both Kovinick and Petteys (see Ref. KOV, PET) list activity in Ogonquit, Maine. Bain's first name was spelled both Lilian and Lillian.
