Description

Although J. Alden Weir was classically trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, his initial reaction to French impressionism was distaste. Nevertheless, like many artists of his generation, he gradually incorporated aspects of the new style into his portraits, still lifes, and landscapes.

Weir never fully abandoned his academic training as the somber colors and solidly rendered objects in this work illustrate. However, the loosely and expressively painted flowers illustrate his growing fluency with impressionist color and brushwork.
