Brother of the celebrated architect Richard Morris Hunt, William Morris Hunt became a distinguished painter and an important figure in New England arts and society, helping to focus attention toward developments in the European art world. Studying in Paris with academic painter Thomas Couture, William ultimately found his character and painting style influenced by Jean-François Millet and the Barbizon school. The Barbizon artists opposed classical conventions and advocated landscape painting for its own sake.
After his return to the United States, Hunt often painted scenes from his years in France, as well as American subjects.
