- Bio
A native of Kôchi prefecture on the island of Shikoku, Ishikawa went to Tokyo (as Edo was renamed after 1868) at the age of sixteen to study Yôga, the newly popular genre of Western-style painting in oil on canvas. In 1902, he embarked on a trip to the United States and Europe. What he saw there must have lingered in his memory for many years, to finally emerge in Ten Types of Female Nude, which became his most famous body of work.
