Hishikawa Moronobu is often regarded as the father of ukiyo-e pictures depicting the "Floating World" of evanescent pleasures. Although he is best known for his lively depictions of Yoshiwara courtesans and their clientele, many of his books treated traditional subject matter such as episodes from Japanese history or classical literature.
