Description
Canada's second largest city; occupies about a third of Île de Montréal. The first French settlement here was Fort Ville Marie (1642-1674), with foundations under the site of the current PAC Musée. It was given its first civic charter by Louis XIV in 1644; it peacefully surrendered to British troops in 1760; it was brought under British N American empire 1763.
