- Description
- England's sixth largest port, Liverpool rapidly expanded due to trade with the Americas and the West Indies in the 18th century. The first dock opened in 1715 and is now 7 miles long. The city was the destination of many Irish immigrants during the Irish famine (1845-1848). During World War II, it was heavily bombed.
