Originally inhabited by Mound Builders; when Europeans arrived, Algonquian-speaking Miami Confederation, Potowatomi and Delaware, lived here; claimed by French in the 17th century, by British in 1763, and by the colonists in the Revolutionary War. It was strongly pro-Union in the Civil War.
