Description
The city of Bremerhaven is located on the Geest River at its junction with the estuary of the Weser River some 37 miles north of Bremen. It serves as the North Sea port for that city. There was a medieval settlement at Lehe on the site. The modern city was founded as a port for Bremen in 1827, and the municipality was formed by the amalgamation of three towns in 1845. Throughout the 19th century, Bremerhaven grew and prospered as both a fishing port and a passenger port. Along with Bremen, it was heavily bombarded in World War II, but the dock area remained largely intact. Fishing, fishery-based manufactures and services, and shipbuilding remain the principal economic activities. The 2004 estimated population was 119,500.
