Description
It was a settlement on the route of Alexander the Great; was also part of Asoka's empire. It is the site of Buddhist rock and pillar edicts; it was held by Moguls (17th century), by Persians (18th century), and by the British (19th century). It is now Afghanistan's second largest city and a major trade center.
