Bio

Hank Kowert arrived in Oregon in the early 1950s. His work was a distillation of his vision of nature through the perception of changes in light, atmosphere, and the passage of the seasons. Kowert used a very distinctive palette, described as tawny, golden, earthy shades, burning reds, acidic greens, and almost transparent blues. He was well known for his silk-screen calendars.

Kowert produced a small body of work because he was particular about what he released. He rarely allowed sketches or unfinished pieces to be seen, even by close friends. He had many one-person shows and received numerous awards after 1959. Kowert appeared to be recovering from injuries he suffered in an auto accident when he died in 1977.
