Bio

An idealist all his life, as a young man Yamaguchi Gen was a member of a utopian society that renounced the materialism of modern life. He went door to door offering to do menial work for food and arrived at the home of Onchi Kōshirō. Onchi discovered Yamaguchi's interest in printmaking and nurtured his career by introducing him to other printmakers. Yamaguchi was self-taught, yet like many other artists of his generation, his work developed in a close community of like-minded friends that included Onchi, Azechi Umetarō, and Sekino Jun'ichirō. Like Onchi, Yamaguchi's signature style was abstract and he enjoyed using non-traditional materials.
