Arthur B. Davies trained as an illustrator and realist landscape painter at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League, New York. Around 1900 Davies developed a style that combined classical or allegorical figures with dream-like landscapes, reminiscent of the works of the French Symbolists. Despite the fanciful tone of his own works, he remained an avid proponent of modern art. Most notably, he helped organize the groundbreaking 1913 Armory Show, as well as other progressive exhibitions that exposed Americans to the European avant-garde.
