Swiss-born Félix Vallotton had a major impact on the woodcut revival in fin-de-siècle Paris. His witty scenes of everyday life in Paris are immediately recognizable, with their stark contours and playful and elegant line. In this sheet, the first by Vallotton to enter the Museum's collection, women pore through the fabric department at the Bon Marché, the first department store in Paris. Vallotton expertly captured the flirtatious interplay between the shopping women and the solicitous salesmen, who lay out yards for the women to inspect.
