Winogrand, who spent most days photographing on the street, was known to obsessively check his answering service. Photographer Joel Myerowitz, who accompanied him on many shooting sessions in New York, noted that Winogrand stopped photographing to call his service every half hour. In an era before cell phones, Winogrand could often be located in a Manhattan phone booth.
