Seattle-based painter Burns originally used photography to create sequential imagery during the 1970s. The camera became her primary tool, and the human form her main subject. The Dreamers photographs consist of enigmatic figures posed in unusual settings. Although likely influenced by earlier sequences, Burns treated each Dreamers image as a unique work, explaining, "Each subject was approached as one formal element among a complement of others—glass, mirrors, changing light."
