Description

A scholar in the employ of Marugame Domain on Tosa Island, Horie Yorinao served as the chief administrator of their Kyoto residence, a post that allowed him to develop close relationships with court nobles. Yorinao's poetry and calligraphy, as seen in this elegant example—a Japanese verse written in kana script—reveals his deep familiarity with classical court culture. This work is a fragment of a long handscroll of poems; another section of the scroll, now in a private collection, dates the composition to 1670.
