Description

Born and raised in New York, William Klein has lived and worked in France since the 1940s. An early practitioner of street photography, Klein began documenting the diverse characters found in the crowds of New York and Paris during the 1950s. His images depend on chance encounters and are facilitated by his aggressive photographic nature. Originally criticized for producing pictures full of imperfections, the blurriness, grain, and high contrast that are hallmarks of his work serve to heighten the sensation of the hustle and bustle of big city life.
