Description

For more than thirty years, Carl Chiarenza has explored photography's complex interplay of realism and abstraction. Creating and then photographing small objects of metal and paper that only hint at the physical world, he emphasizes line, design, and surface texture over a distinctive subject matter. Yet these objects evoke associations through form, highlight, and shadow. The Peace Warriors series, from which this photograph is drawn, is Chiarenza's artistic response to his dismay over the Iraq War: some of the abstracted figures call to mind such legendary figures as Don Quixote and the Grim Reaper, while others evoke contemporary soldiers on present-day battlefields.
