Caleb Charland’s photographs combine art and science to uncover wonder in the everyday. The resulting images, often created through multiple camera exposures (but without digital manipulation), are at once familiar and strange. Cube with Ruler and Penlight exemplifies Charland’s interest in physics and the his calculated process of discovery through the use of mundane items: what appears to be a three-dimensional, illuminated cube is in fact a series of separate moments in time captured on a single sheet of large-format film. Close examination of the print reveals the photographer’s shadowed hands as they skillfully trace the fleeting shape of the cube’s edges with a penlight.
