Between 2006 and 2009, Jonathan Torgovnik traveled to Rwanda on multiple occasions to interview and photograph young women who had been raped by Hutu militiamen during the Rwandan genocide. Many became pregnant by their attackers, who not only violated them physically but also murdered members of their families. Today these women struggle to raise and bond with children born of violence. Yvette, the subject of this photograph along with her son, Isaac, explained to Torgovnik her conflicted feelings: “I even thought of committing suicide. But I feared suicide and thought instead that I should give birth to that kid and kill it. But when I gave birth, he was so beautiful that I developed love immediately. I said to myself, ‘I can’t kill him. I am going to love him.’”
