Street photographer Lee Friedlander and pop artist Jim Dine met in 1962, and quickly became friends and colleagues. As Dine explained, “He gave me a photograph of Cincinnati without knowing that I am from there. We have been exchanging things all the time since then. Friendship and pictures. Our work is from the same house.” Their first collaboration culminated in the 1969 portfolio Works from the Same House: Photographs and Etchings, a group of 16 objects that juxtapose Friedlander’s pictures with Dine’s prints. Like a film montage, the proximity of disconnected images on a single page encourages the viewer to create new and varied narratives.
