Joseph Raphael was a devoted follower of French Impressionism and became internationally recognized for his work in the Impressionist style. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian in Paris, Raphael settled in Uccle, Belgium. He often painted his charming cottage there, with its vegetable and flower gardens, which may also have been a source for his still lifes of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. He remained in Europe until World War II, when he returned to his birthplace, California.
