Description

Californian John McLaughlin"s early interest in Japanese and Chinese culture and philosophy became a driving force behind his art. A self-taught artist, he developed a unique synthesis of eastern and western thought and a technique marked by balance, harmony, and elegance. Untitled, 1947, is a transitional work for McLaughlin from his early organic abstraction toward the mature highly reductivist minimal canvases of the 1960s and 1970s.
