William H. Rau completed many landscape assignments in the late nineteenth century, some more unusual than others. Early in his career, he photographed for a U.S. government-sponsored survey charting the path of Venus as it passed in front of the sun. After extended photographic assessments of the American Rocky Mountains and Egypt, he opened a studio in Philadelphia. Between 1890 and 1895, Rau served as the official photographer of Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley Railroad. This view from the project depicts the Vosburg Tunnel. Completed in 1886, the 3,900-foot tunnel circumvented a five-mile bend in the Susquehanna River, shortening the railroad’s route by more than four miles.
