A samurai of the Odawara domain, Okamoto Shûki studied painting with another samurai-scholar, Watanabe Kazan. Along with his fellow student Tsubaki Chinzan, Shûki is regarded as one of the finest literati painters working in Edo in the first half of the nineteenth century. This painting is representative of the more colorful works from their circle, making use of the "boneless" style, in which forms are created through color washes, without ink outlines.
