Rāma and his forces arrived at the southern coast of India to learn that Rāvana had taken Sitā to his island home of Lankā. Hanuman, the monkey general sworn to Rāma's service, leapt across the ocean to search for Sitā. Here he is seen twice: once dashing across the roof of Rāvana’s palace and again in the garden. Rāvana is the ten-headed, manyarmed king shown in the center of his castle, surrounded by his ministers—donkeys, rats, and other creatures. Sitā keeps herself at a chaste distance in the far corner of a grove.
