For half a century, Shigaraki potter Sasayama Tadayasu has been a leading figure among Japanese ceramists who spurn tradition and function, identifying themselves as sculptors and full participants in an international market of art-making and ideas. Red Clay Surface, which would have originally been paired with another piece in the same glaze, reflects his interest in geometric forms.
