Description

Gordon Gilkey learned printmaking at the University of Oregon, where he engaged in graduate studies for a master's degree in fine art from 1933 to 1936. Professor Eyler Brown taught him etching, and when Brown returned in 1935 from a sabbatical year working with the Belgian etcher Jules de Bruycker, Gilkey assisted him in building a press and soon switched his major from painting and drawing to printmaking. Der Baumstamm (The Tree Trunk) reveals Gilkey's assimilation of Brown's etching revival-inspired reliance on precise line and tonal shifts to create a light-filled atmosphere. With the great curving shape of the gnarled tree trunk as the focus of the composition, Gilkey enhances its presence by sharp contrasts of light and shade, achieved by varying the biting of the plate in that area.
