The reclusive artist Joseph Cornell, like the European Surrealists, created collages and assemblages that used disparate images to create a poetic whole. Cornell's boxes were to him "poetic theaters." Elements from opera, theater, and ballet are common in his work, along with references to natural history and astronomy. Many works are tinged by longing and nostalgia for things past.
