Lee Friedlander has traveled throughout the United States for more than fifty years, photographing all aspects of what he calls the "social landscape." Though well-known for his urban imagery, he also explores suburbs and small towns, documenting the complicated infrastructure of telephone poles, directional signs, power lines, and lampposts that connects and arranges these spaces. He whimsically calls attention to these functional objects—normally considered eyesores—by capturing their geometric shapes and the shadows they cast on ubiquitous pavement, encouraging viewers to consider everyday scenes that are often ignored.
