A gifted landscape artist, Julian Alden Weir also achieved a reputation for his thoughtful portraits. He painted this likeness of his good friend and patron C.E.S. Wood in 1901. Wood, one of the founders of the Portland Art Museum, first met Weir at West Point in the 1870s and the two remained close friends.
In this painting, Weir shows us both sides of Wood—his bourgeois prosperity is suggested in his bearing, and his bohemian tastes in the flowing folds of his shirt, cravat, and casually styled hair.
