This rare example of Japanese temple furniture is designed in an “open-panel box” form inspired by Chinese precedents dating to the Tang dynasty (618-907). The delicacy of the cusped decorative apron under the top and the elegant elongation of the slender legs are, however, uniquely Japanese.
