Some modern artists, including Grace Hartigan, used mythology as a starting point for highly abstract compositions. In this fluidly drawn lithograph, Hartigan refers to the tale of Dido, the queen of Carthage, who tragically stabbed herself when her lover Aeneas deserted her to fulfill his destiny and lead his people to Rome.
