Description

In 1895, more than one hundred plaster casts of important Greek and Roman sculptures arrived from Europe, becoming the first works of art to enter the Museum's permanent collection. Plaster casts were opular objects in many American museums during the late nineteenth century, and educated visitors about classical sculpture from antiquity. Students of the Museum Art School, which opened in 1909, frequently sketched the works in the pursuit of proper physical form, proportion, balance, and volume. In an era when few art classes permitted live nude models, these plaster casts became invaluable tools for instruction about the human body.
