Through self-portraiture and appropriation of historical photographs, Annu Matthew—who was born in England, grew up in India, and now lives in the United States—explores the ways in which different cultures have been assimilated, sometimes by force, into mainstream American society. Here, she compares portraits of herself and Tom Torlino, a member of the Navajo tribe, taken before and after cultural assimilation. Striking modifications in dress and hairstyle suggest imperceptible psychological changes. Matthew frequently pairs her self-portraits with images of Native Americans, encouraging viewers to consider varying meanings of the term “Indian.”
