William Trost Richards was a dedicated landscape and marine painter whose deep reverence for nature led him to adopt the realism of fellow mid-century American landscapist Thomas Cole (1801-1848). Though well known for his poetic landscapes, in his later years Richards became intrigued with the movement and force of water. He spent his summers traveling along the southeastern coast, studying New England's shores, and visiting England's Cornish coast.
In Marine, Richards demonstrates his unique sensibility towards the luminosity of light and atmosphere, creating what he called "a sea with the effect of light." The elements of nature, as interpreted through the artist's technique rather than objects, are the focus of the painting.
