This painting of southern Oregon was one of the Museum’s earliest acquisitions. It is typical of Frank Vincent DuMond’s impressionist style. DuMond, who founded a painting school in Old Lyme, Connecticut, was known for his skilled brushwork and subtle palette. In Sketch of Table Rock Near Medford, the low horizon line emphasizes the brilliant summer sky and the imposing structure of the rock formation. DuMond was a frequent—and influential—visitor to Oregon. In the 1890s, he conducted classes for the Portland Sketch Club and later was a visiting instructor at the Museum Art School, founded in 1909.
