Dora Erikson’s Dakota Hotel perfectly captures the atmosphere and stillness of a starlit night on the prairie. The sparseness and simplicity of her technique is ideally matched to her raw, rural subject matter. The figures, each lost in their own thoughts, seem as peaceful as the horses that graze in the pasture. Beyond stretch what seem like limitless land and sky. Little is known about Erikson, who studied with Harry Wentz at the Museum Art School (now the Pacific Northwest College of Art) and also attended the Arts Students League in New York. Another of her works, Open Air Concert, can be seen at Timberline Lodge.
