This handsome storage jar is an example of some of the earliest deliberately glazed ceramic wares in China. Potters noticed that when wood ash in the kiln fell on the surface of a vessel, it fused with the clay surface to produce a natural glaze. Here, a glaze made from wood ash, water, and clay is captured and controlled by the use of three successive ridges along the jar’s shoulder.
