Mosaics made from thousands of tiny tesserae, typically of opaque glass, used to create pictures, often of famous works of art or scenes of ruins, on such items as jewelry, plaques, small boxes, and tabletops. Made from the 16th century to the present, they were produced particularly in Rome in the 19th century. The term was coined by British collector Sir Arthur Gilbert (1913-2001) in the mid-20th century.
